While the 7-day cube test result is for indicative only , officially the characteristic strength of the test cubes is to be determined by the 28-day strength . But at this moment the concrete pour is already cast and cured . In case there is trouble found about the 28-day cube test result(s) or the test cubes are missing , the Engineer may ask for test cores . In view of coring the affected concrete for re-test will a) curtail the embedded reinforcement , b) require subsequent plugging with non-shrinkage material and c) deteriorate the concrete finishes , the Schimt Hammer Test could serve the purpose as another alternative for the fair faced concrete . Before testing , the Engineer’s Representative will mark a specified area on the affected concrete with chalk and the site supervisor should use a carbonaceous stone to rub off the surface mortar to expose the aggregates . The laboratory staff will then use the Schimt Hammer to conduct the tests at about 10 spots evenly spaced and diagonally across the specified area and obtain the respective strength from the calibration chart .
